Candle Care

How do I care for my candle?

Follow the first-burn instructions on your candle label and the care guidance supplied with it. Allowing an even melt pool helps reduce tunnelling, where unmelted wax remains at the edges. Never exceed the maximum burn time stated on your candle label.

  • Follow the maximum burn time stated on your candle label.

  • Trim your wick before each lighting according to the instructions supplied with your candle. Wood and cotton wicks may require different care.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, near draughts or anything that could catch alight.

  • Keep well away from babies, children and animals

  • Do not pick up the candle vessel whilst it is hot

How should I store my candle?

  • Candles contain wax and fragrance oil, both of which are very sensitive to changes in temperature. Try to store your candles at room temperature, usually 18-20 degrees. They should be fine at anything from 10-25 degrees, but it's best not to put them in the fridge or anywhere too hot.

Why does the surface of my candle look imperfect after burning?

  • Plant wax is prone to cracks, frosting and lumps and bumps after cooling. This will not impact the performance of the candle or its scent in any way and is perfectly normal.

Can I clean and reuse my candle glass?

  • Absolutely! They make great vessels to store make-up brushes, cotton buds and crayons. To clean your glass, do the following:

  • Stand your glass in a small bowl of boiling water. Make sure the water doesn't go inside the glass.

  • After a couple of minutes, the wax will have melted. Use kitchen paper to wipe out the inside of the glass. The wax should wipe away easily and the wick holder should come out.

  • Once the glass is wax free, soak the label in the water for a few minutes, then use a scrubby sponge or brush to gently remove.

  • Finish with a wash in hot soapy water to get your glass sparkling again!

  • Never pour melted wax down your sink as this could cause blockages.

Are your candles safe?

  • Our products adhere to the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. All products have been tested and assessed for safety before being released for sale.

  • The base of each candle contains a CLP label, which depicts hazards and warnings and lists allergens contained in the specific fragrance oil used. More information is available in our Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

  • 53 North Candle Co are compliant with all EU regulations.

Are Scented Candles Safe for Use Around Dogs?

Scented candles are a popular way to create a cosy atmosphere in our homes, but pet owners often wonder whether these fragrant candles are safe for their furry companions, especially dogs. While scented candles can enhance the ambiance, certain precautions need to be taken to ensure the well-being of your canine friend.

Potential Risks of Scented Candles to Dogs:

Toxic Fumes: Some scented candles are made from paraffin and release toxins when burned. This can be harmful if inhaled by dogs and humans alike and may lead to respiratory issues.

Essential Oils: Certain essential oils used in scented candles are toxic to dogs and can cause symptoms like vomiting, drooling, or difficulty breathing. In particular including cinnamon, pennyroyal, peppermint, pine, sweet birch, tea tree (melaleuca), wintergreen, and ylang ylang, are poisonous to dogs if ingested or applied to the skin. Both ingestion and skin exposure can be toxic. These oils in a candle are not necessarily harmful but it is always a good idea to burn them in a well ventilated room.

Keeping Your Pets Safe:

Choose Pet-Friendly Candles: opt for candles made from natural ingredients like soy, coconut or beeswax, without harmful additives.

Ventilate Your Room: Make sure your room is well ventilated, although ensure there are no draughts. Avoid using candles in very small spaces.

Keep Candles Out of Reach: Place candles in areas that are inaccessible to your dog to prevent accidental burns or ingestion.

Monitor Your Dog: Watch for any signs of discomfort or allergies when using scented candles around your dog and discontinue use if any issues arise.

While scented candles can be enjoyed in a pet-friendly manner, it's crucial to prioritise your dog's safety and well-being when incorporating them into your living space. By being mindful of the type of candles you use and taking necessary precautions, you can create a soothing environment without compromising your dog's health.
